The University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) is determined to create a fresh agenda on the subject of race aimed at dismantling the historical, cultural, and institutional structures that prevent racial and ethnic justice.
Prejudice and discrimination based on race and ethnicity permeate the structures of everyday life, and the passage of time alone will not eliminate them. Public discourse and private conversation often take place under a veneer of Southern cordiality and civility that inhibit open and honest discussion.
UALR established an Institute on Race and Ethnicity for the people of Little Rock, Central Arkansas, and the state. The Institute will be the culmination of seven years of internal conversations, programming, research, and outreach on the subject of race.
The mission of the Institute is to seek racial and ethnic justice in Arkansas by remembering and understanding the past, informing and engaging the present, and shaping and defining the future.
